Identification
  Index of Contaminants in Sediments
Descriptor 8: indexChemical parameters are grouped into specific categories of contaminants: Metals, PAHs, organochlorine compounds, pesticides, BTEX, phenols, HCBDs, organotins, aromatics, chlorinated aliphatics, nitrobenzenes, chlorobenzenes, aromatic amines. An index was developed to assess the concentration of priority substances in each contaminant group. It is built on the differences between the single concentration values and the respective EQS (reported in the national / international legislation), weighted by an appropriate coefficient of hazard/ priority. To calculate the final index for each contaminant group, it was decided to use, within the initial assessment, the average of the individual indices determined for each contaminant. The obtained dimensionless number is corrected by a coefficient that varies according to the hazard / priority defined by Decision 2455/2001, adopted by the 105/2008/EC Directive. A first level of integration is achieved, for each group of contaminants, from the average of the individual indices applied to substances included in this group. This mechanism is designed to give a margin of tolerance and elasticity (with particular reference to the open sea, of which we still have little knowledge) to the strict application of EQS and to the principle of "one out, all out" of the 2000/60/EC Directive. The chosen index has the great advantage of being applicable to each environmental matrix (water, sediment, biota), providing results easy to read. The index is centered at zero. Therefore, if the final index is equal or lower than zero, the exceedances of single contaminants did not occur or were very low, thus not affecting the averaged index. In turn, a final index with values higher than zero, evidences some exceedances of the EQS of specific contaminants, affecting significantly the averaged index and therefore must be reported.
